Recently concluded Milan furniture fair 2011 highlighted certain trends in international furniture industry. It was the 50^th year special celebration event. Modern furniture lines designed by the world famous designers were displayed here. Some interesting revelations about the trends in products, materials, fabrics and colors were observed during the show. Furniture industry has been badly hit due to global recession. The organizers of the show tried hard to convey that the industry has recovered fairly. Some of the major trends that emerged during the show are discussed here.

One of the strongest trends is noticed in the choice of colors. Increased use of bright colors in everything from fabrics, furniture and finishing was evident. Whether it is molded plastic furniture, lacquered wood or metal finish, vibrant colors are preferred. Use of bright colors such as red, yellow and orange may be the natural reaction to dispel the dullness of recession. Living room furniture including sofa was presented in many shades of colors including red, violet and yellow.

Another noteworthy trend is simplicity in design and emphasis on comfort. This also could be the effect of prolonged recession that people are looking for comfort rather than flashy and flamboyant designs. Furniture designs are focused on basic form and simplicity. Ergonomic designs with comfortable seats, high backs and supporting arm rests are in. Beds, sectional sofa, lounges and chaise are designed with subtle and subdued influence rather than loud eye-catching presence. High quality material, great level of comfort and superb finishing are the main elements of high end modern elegant furniture.

Major trends in textiles and fabrics are art and craft. Traditionally woven fabrics and quilted finish were seen among sofas, arm chairs, beds and even wall panels and lamp shades.
