Thanks to the fixed marble louvers which let in light just the right amount as wanted, the entire house also enjoys thermal control to avoid excess heat. The marble louver slats add to the distinct character of the house as much as to the play of light and shade, warmth and cool breeze of the changing seasons – exteriors and interiors.

The couple required living area, three bedrooms, and a workshop cum office along with ground level terraces, small garden and a rooftop garden. The linear design of this modern, contemporary house is very efficient and compact. It utilizes every inch of space available. This modern contemporary house is an ideal example of site utilization as per client requirements using affordable building technology. The house was built at approximately $200/sq.ft. rate.

The ground level includes a compact service area, living area and two terraces. One terrace is in front of the house adjacent to the sidewalk and another is in the rear of the house along living, dining and kitchen area. The tall windows throughout the house give beautiful view of the garden outside. Cedar sunscreen and fibre cement panels over these glass windows offer stylish look and privacy to the residents.

A staircase in the center of the house connects all the four levels. On ground level, a small porch and TV room is on one side of the staircase and dining area and living room are on the other side. The second floor includes three bedrooms. Continuous strip windows along the walls of bedrooms allow abundant natural light. The top level contains a penthouse surrounded by terraces. The penthouse is converted into office cum workshop. The entire upper level is covered by the cantilevered wood screen.

This contemporary urban house extensively uses modern building technique of glazing, Steel columns used in structural design allows floor to ceiling glazing. Floor to ceiling glazing gives beautiful visual effect. The exteriors of the house are covered with rain screen. Horizontal red cedar slats on battens are used as the rain screen. Sun screens on glass windows and rain screens on exterior walls are used in such a way that they provide protection during summer while admitting winter light.
