The Floating Shack House Design with Stylish Interiors

The Floating Shack house is a single family house designed for the owners of the Emerald Art Glass Factory, located at Pittsburgh, USA. It is the longest cantilevered structure that floats above the glass factory like a foreman’s shack. It extends out three times more than the Falling Water. The Falling Water is a masterpiece designed by the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935 in rural southwestern Pennsylvania. It was a weekend home for the Kaufmann family, built partially over a waterfall. Frank Lloyd Wright extensively used cantilevered galleries to capture the surrounding beauty. The Falling Water house is one of the 28 places listed by the Smithsonian’s Life List as ‘to visit before you die.’ It is considered as the best American Architecture work. Now the house is open to public as a museum. Everyday thousands of tourists visit the Falling Water house.

The floating shack house or Emerald Art Glass house is designed by the Fisher Architecture. Emerald Art Glass manufactures stained glass and architectural glass pieces including glass shower cubicles, etched glass doors, tempered glass walls, textured glass counter and sinks, custom made mirrors etc. The owner of the factory wanted a residential facility similar to a foreman’s shack above his manufacturing unit. The architects have done wonderful job by designing a steel clad horizontal structure hanging precariously over a concrete block. Site area for the shack is 2400 sq feet and built up area is 3700 sq feet. The steel framed house is firmly clasped using flat lock seamed Cor 10 panels over the concrete base. The horizontal structure is designed in such a way that it aligns with the suburban slopes connecting to the downtown. It also relates to the vertical design of the US Steel tower looming in the horizons. US Steel tower is the tallest skyscraper in Pittsburgh offering office space to thousands of businesses.

The shack is divided into two sections. One is the concrete base and the other is extended horizontal structure fixed over the concrete block. The concrete block contains garage, workshop, gymnasium and a guest bedroom. The horizontal steel structure upstairs contains living area, open kitchen and master bedroom. Glass wall on the sides of the living room make it comfortably warm and bright with natural light. Bamboo floored living area has butted glass façade at the other end. From inside it gives the view of the downtown and from outside it works as a sign for the glass factory. Master bedroom can be reached through a small series of stairs above the kitchen. The interiors of the shack are stylish and minimalist. It is a cozy and comfortable living place in downtown area.

The below shown luxurious cabin house is a one story cabin with a daylight basement situated on Vashon Island in the Washington State of America. The current cabin’s lot coverage cannot be increased because of the perfect site development restrictions resulting from an existing drain field. On the other hand, the clients want to create a complete new and enhanced floor spaces.
Vandeventer + Carlander a pair of very well known Architects solved these problems by breaking down the existing structure down to the main floor. Now the architects created an additional floor area which translated in making a small addition, replacing a previous exterior deck. Then they extended the center main structure itself that is an insertion wood box slides in over the existing floor structure and cantilevers out over existing basement walls. This architecture surely was not affecting the existing drain field.

Here is a house that is the very epitome of modern minimalist architecture which turns the concept of design on its head. When you first get a glimpse of this house, you will most certainly do a double take and rub your eyes in disbelief. Has the earth caved in, you’d wonder. Well, think again. This unique piece of architecture is the brainchild of Nunatak Architects who have credited the agnificent Swiss Alps as the source of their inspiration. Located in Switzerland, this inclined house is actually a block placed at an incline on the ground and takes its inspiration from the natural surroundings. The sloping sides of the house are inspired by the eastern and the western flanks of the mountains and even the color grey is evocative of the grey mountains.

The Nunatak Architects also spared no effort making the house eco – friendly. To that end, the house was constructed using eco-friendly prefabricated wood framework, passive heating, interiors coated with painted wood particles, protection from external heat with an insulation coat and the concrete flooring of the house equipped with an integrated heating system.

The philosophy of minimalist home designs subscribes to “less is more” and this concept calls for clean lines, simple color palettes and uncluttered surfaces. Classic Japanese design is essentially minimalist in nature and has been one of the inspirations for minimalism. Architects who subscribe to minimalist design aim to break down forms and structures to their basic elements, removing dimensions from spaces and connecting the intersecting visual planes of the building. This approach leaves the architect with considerable room to play with wide open spaces in the interiors.

Wingardhs design studio the designer of the Villa below, located on dramatic West Swedish Landscape is well known designer. The villa has an open-plan for the kitchen and separate dining room and beautiful lounge nestled between the panoramic sea view and the atrium. The lower store which is hidden from the neighbors contains the bedrooms and other private spaces. The biggest attraction of this villa is that the entire structure has been carved into the solid rock of the hillside and just for the creativity of the architect he left a big chunk of that same rock in the living room and the bathroom as a reminder of nature. The walls all around the house are built in light weight concrete cladding with metal sheet after plastering it on the inside as well as the outside.

This incredible two-storey villa is a testament to the ingenuity and the creativity of the designer. Wingardhs design studio is the creator of this most extraordinary house called Villa Astrid which has been built from a solid cliff rock. Located in the West of Sweden, even though the location of villa Astrid is so unusual, it is equipped with all the modern utilities. Moreover, lest you forget the origins of the villa, the designer has left a huge chunk of the rock in its natural state in the living room and the bathroom. The interiors are in the minimalist style with an open plan kitchen and huge windows in every room ensure a generous dose of sunlight throughout the day. A spacious veranda outside has deck chairs on which one can laze about basking in the Nordic sun.

Villa Astrid conforms to the local building code of 3.5-metre eaves height and a roof pitch between 14 and 27 degrees. The upper floor comprises the bedrooms, the second floor has the open plan kitchen, a dining room and a large lounge and there is an outdoor lounge with an outdoor fireplace. The concrete roof has been insulated with foam glass with metal sheet cladding. The walls too are constructed from solid, light weight concrete plastered in the inside and outside with a similar metal sheet cladding as the roof. Cladding is essentially a process by which one material covers another and the cladding materials used in construction have a dual function of giving a finish and also protecting the exterior walls of a home. Also known as siding in construction parlance, exterior cladding gives a home the desired appearance and also protects the house from the elements such as the wind and the rain. Doubtless, the cladding materials that the home owner chooses have a big impact on the design of the structure; they also affect the energy efficiency and the acoustics in the structure.

Gert Wingårdh holds the distinction of being considered as one of the most renowned living Swedish architect. He started his career as a postmodernist in the 1980’s and is known today for his avant garde style. Wingårdh is known for not adhering to any one style but instead each project taken on a case by case basis, always heavily influenced by the external environment. He has also been inspired by Sweden’s rich tradition of building with wood which he has blended with a ecological awareness and technical skills. Chiloé Island, called Isla de Chiloé in Spanish, also known as Greater Island of Chiloé or Isla Grande de Chiloé is the largest island of the Chiloé Archipelago off the coast of Chile in the Pacific Ocean. This island is located towards southern Chile in the Los Lagos Region and has now acquired fame for a unique house which is made entirely from wood. Called the Muelle house, this ultra contemporary house has been designed by Jonas Retamal and overlooks the Castro’s fjord. Since this region is infamous for its inclement and unstable weather, the Muelle house was specially designed to counter Mother Nature’s fury including fires and earthquakes. The wood for the Muelle house consists of peanut, ulmo and the tepa trees which were sourced from the forests nearby. The varieties in the textures and colors of the barks of the trees are reflected in the myriad colors in the house.

The house constitutes three volumes, which are essentially designed to cater to three functions which are the service areas, sleeping quarters and the lounging area which includes the kitchen, the living and the dining room that leads onto the deck. Muelle house is perhaps one of the last remaining houses made entirely of wood in Chile. The maintenance of wooden houses depends on the weather conditions of the area in question so rough weather conditions will mean an increased frequency of maintenance. In fact, a properly maintained wooden house can last can last over a 100 years after which it will require a complete restoration. Muelle house has been constructed on an 8 degree slope on stilts and has been designed to withstand the worst weather conditions. A home made from wood always evokes images of warmth and comfort and a log cabin is the archetypal wooden home that is redolent of these feelings.
