Making over a house is a major project. More so when it is one among a row of houses each one different from each other and have significantly different looks. How to make the house interesting and refreshingly remarkable? How to enhance the natural advantages that are part of the home and yet bring a new focus and new look to the home?

No house can be made over without due consideration to the restraints that may be part of the location, vegetation and other utility services that are part of the community to which the home belongs. The house makeover has to reckon with mundane things like power lines, water lines, managing storm-water drains, and other vegetation and proceed well. What are the changes brought by the makeover? Instead of a closed-up solid structure with not much light or open airy look, the house got transferred to an open structure much different than what it was and what the neighbouring buildings look like. The home gets glass panelled rooms allowing sunshine inside and other structures like patios for a totally different look.

Where is the home? This 1940 sq feet family residence in Racine, Wisconsin, is a totally sustainable structure powered by solar power. This is a LEED platinum certified home with a sustainable design and features that make it a viable green structure and at the same time looking aesthetically pleasing with a street view as well breathtaking beautiful lake view. The garage gets incorporated into the building which was in a narrow plot that was an infill area on the edge of Lake Michigan. With superbly planned cross ventilation system with a geothermal system and special features of high efficiency glazing and insulated rain screen make the home extra special protected at the same time providing transparency for well-lit look.

The special features glazing and rain screens protect the house from the extreme climates that prevail in the vicinity of Lake Michigan. While the house is designed to utilize the breeze for cross ventilation, the sustainability features get augmented by the solar cells, LED lighting , low-flow bathroom structures and with zero-construction waste achievement.

The makeover of OS House was designed and crafted by Johnsen Schmaling Architects. The award winning architects have made the building to stand out as a unique and spectacularly beautiful structure that is totally self-sustainable.

The Wimberley House is a 5000 sq feet ‘L’ plan residence house designed by Cunningham Architects. It is located at the Texas hill country among thick augmentation of oak trees and juniper trees. This peaceful retreat can be reached by driving half a mile narrow and winding road from the main gateway. From the garage a short walking path leads to the house. The house is divided in to two separate areas. One is for socializing and the other is for peaceful respite. The public wing of the house contains kitchen, dining room and living room. The bedrooms are located in the other wing of the house. The L shaped house design can be divided into two separate modules. Both the modules are connected by a glass hallway. The glass hallway is covered by a cantilevered roof. Glass walls of the hallway offer sensational experience of walking by the forest. One module of the house is clad by the stained cement fiber boards and the other module is a glass pavilion.

Roof deck on the terrace is an amazing architectural element of the house. It can be approached by a stylish spiral staircase made of steel. It is enclosed by a railing made of steel and glass. The roof deck is spacious enough to host large gatherings. Breathtaking view of surrounding forests up to ten miles is visible from the roof top. The deck is also used for rainwater harvesting. Another relaxing spot in the house is pavilion deck next to the swimming pool. It offers tranquil and serene moments by the poolside. Roof deck and poolside deck have comfortable outdoor furniture perfect for relaxation. The house is an energy efficient home built using sustainable green materials. Local building materials and resources are used in house design.

Interiors of the house look warm and inviting due to extensive use of wood and very comfortable looking modern furniture. Ceilings in entertaining area are wood clad. Recessed lighting in the ceiling creates soothing and welcoming atmosphere. Large size sofas in living room are upholstered in neutral colors. A thick area rug, large center table and contemporary side table with curved surfaces look modern and contemporary. Dining area has a big dining table with dining chairs made of stainless steel and wood. A statue of Buddha in dining room creates zen like atmosphere. Entire living area has floor to ceiling glass walls. During daytime they offer soothing view of natural beauty surrounding the house. At night these glass walls create interesting reflections in light and shadow.

This elegant and environment friendly house surrounded by Red Oak and Elm trees is certainly neighbors’ envy and owner’s pride. It is located at Dallas, Texas. The house design of this two story building is a collaborative effort between Cunningham Architects and the award winning landscape designers Hocker Design Group, both located at Dallas, Texas. Hocker Design Group has extensive experience in designing landscapes for rural, urban and agricultural needs.

As a result of climate changes, eco friendly home designs are in demand. Eco friendly homes are also known as Green homes or sustainable landscapes. Such houses are built to protect environment and conserve natural resources. Eco friendly home designs use materials like solar panels, wind turbines, rocks, trees and plants. Techniques like water conservation, glazing, insulation, recycling are utilized to fight extreme climate conditions.

The exterior three sides of this eco friendly house are covered by a rain screen system made up of Ipe hardwood that gives beautiful silver grey sheen. The entire South facade is covered by eight feet wide sliding glass doors. This gives an ample view of lush green garden and an infinity edge swimming pool. A porch, in front of the façade, covered by a cantilevered roof is an ideal place to recline in front of the swimming pool. The glass tiled swimming pool surrounded by garden walls is a huge relief from harsh and sunny Texas weather.

The interiors of this two story house are designed in such a way that there is ample space to display a large collection of art and automobiles. The concrete floor downstairs blends very well with the exterior deck and surrounding garden. Elegant woodwork and soothing lighting in dining area creates an appropriate ambiance for a leisurely meal. Sitting area in front of the TV utilizes natural light. The upper level comprises of the guest room and art studio. Beautiful art work displayed in upper level balconies makes the space aesthetically pleasing.

The house is set at the far rear end of the lot. Mass planting in the garden makes the house invisible from the street. The garden is paved by the large stone slabs leading from the street to the house. A fire pit is also incorporated in the garden. It is surrounded by the organic pathways. Exteriors and interiors of the garden house blend well with each other. It is a boon to have such an environment friendly garden house in Texas.

This Solar House is able to easily accommodate comfortably a family of 4 and this makes it possible to fabricate and build the entire dwelling under fifteen days. This house designs also generates three times the energy it consumes and also houses an orchard in order to produce food. This modular built 1400 square feet v-shaped home is a result of the growing interest in people for preserving the environment. They architect has uses reclaimed and recycled materials and products. The entire exterior of the house is made up of steel cladding and cedar with custom fabricated metal roof. Energy saving windows has been designed. The design is the roof is such that it can collect rain water for use in gardening purposes. A lot of the landscaping uses drought resistant plants hence saving a lot on water. Eco Fabulous Homes has presented an award to the Architect of this house.

Increasing pollution, deforestation and scarcity of resources has led to an increasing number of house owners and architects looking at reducing their carbon footprint and using resources in a responsible and eco-friendly manner. Environment friendly houses are becoming popular and many new innovative methods in green construction are constantly emerging. The Fab Lab House is a most unusual looking eco-friendly house which was designed by The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC). The Fab Lab house was their entry into the 2010 Solar Decathlon Europe which was a competition aimed at spreading the message of the benefits of using renewable energies in homes and solar energy in particular. The construction of the Fab Lab house was done using common materials such as plywood panels etc and also locally found machinery such as laser cutting or milling machines. The creators of Fab Lab opted to wood instead of steel on account of the light and manageable qualities of wood. The rationale behind the selection of the material was based on the availability, ease of use and maintenance as against their quality or functional optimization.

The quirky design of the Fab Lab house is compelling and reminds you of a spaceship from Mars. The designers need to be applauded for their ability to think out of the box in their efforts to create awareness about conservation. Some have compared this wacky design to a clumsy caterpillar. The interiors which resemble the innards of a boat’s hull look comfy, inviting, very airy with good ventilation. The bubbles on the roof serve as solar water heaters and each bubble has black coils filled with water, purchased from a local manufacturer for $100 each. The designer has been pleased with the performance of these solar water heaters which
have proved to be very effective. Moreover, since the house rests on three pillars, there is space below the house to indulge in outdoor activities. The Fab Lab house can accommodate a family of four and the interiors boast of some very high-tech features.

The unusual form of the house has been conceived to maximize the house’s solar performance and although the original design was that of a sphere, the design was altered to achieve maximum solar gain for Madrid. Therefore, if the house were to have been built anywhere else in the world, the shape, size and the curvature would have been consequently altered to be compatible with the solar needs of that particular region. The intention of IACC was two pronged which was to build a solar powered home as well as test the boundaries of parametric architecture and digital fabrication. More than 20,000 curious visitors have thronged to the Fab Lab solar house intrigued by its strange shape. In fact, people around the world have their own versions of what the Fab Lab house looks like. According to Prince Felipe the Fab Lab looks like a boat but some others call it a “peanut house,” “cinnamon submarine,” “forest zeppelin” or “whale belly”.

This uber modern minimalist house overlooking the Coldwater Canyon is located in Beverly Hills California and is the creation of Aleks Istanbullu Architects. Called the green house, it has been inspired by Mother Nature and every nook and corner of this unique structure evokes the beauty of nature. The building is enveloped by a canopy of trees which blend seamlessly with the exterior of colored fiber cement green panels. It has been built apart from the main house as a place where the owners can have a quiet place to read, relax or listen to music, much like a private den. The green color theme on the exterior blends with a similar nature inspired
theme in the interior which has Wenge closet doors and bright resin panels. A charming pond outside has four granite stepping stones that form a pathway to a solid wengé-stained door in the center of a clear glass wall.

Wenge is a dark colored tropical timber, with a distinctive figure, very heavy and hard which makes it suitable for flooring and staircases. The color wenge is inspired from this wood. The green house consists of a kitchen, a bedroom, a bath and double-
height library with 16-foot-tall bookshelves. Aleks Istanbullu have addressed their concern for global warming and deforestation
all over the world with the green house which symbolises nature. Aleks Istanbullu Architects, AIA was formed 1986 have since been involved in a diverse range of projects including rehabilitation of commercial and institutional facilities, multi-unit housing projects, child care centers, tenant improvements and single family houses.

A growing tribe of individuals and architects have been making a concerted effort to reduce their carbon footprint by building eco-friendly houses. The interest in this industry has fuelled technological innovations in building materials and techniques in
