They look plush without looking flashy or flamboyant. Natural stones and wood are used extensively in the house design. Recessed lighting in pyramid shaped roofs creates a dreamlike ambiance.

Living room has wooden flooring and a fireplace. Fireplace wall is done using stones. Floor lighting on both the sides of the fireplace illuminates the stone wall. The living room has no furniture except two very long sofas with accent pillows and a center table. Dining room is covered by the walls of glass. Swimming pool and beautiful landscape outside is visible from this room. Private spaces are separate from the public spaces. They can be accessed through various breezeways connecting them. Casa Son Vida1 is built using sustainable materials in modern contemporary style. It has large open spaces indoors and outdoors. 8,500 sq feet of luxury villa design do not follow conventional norms of traditional architectural design. The house is designed with plenty of curves in structural design. It looks as if a spacecraft has emerged out of the ground or just landed on the Earth. The interiors of the luxurious villa are very unconventional and modern, done by the Marcel Wanders Studio. This is their first international residential project. Most of the exteriors and interiors are white. There is a gorgeous swimming pool designed in dark blue color. White stairs from a curved structure leads to the swimming pool. White deck chairs on the blue deck look amazingly inviting.

As soon as we enter the villa there is a huge exotic looking sculpture in the main hall. Walls are white with colorful accent wall art. Dining area has a beautiful black chandelier hanging on a black dining table and chairs. Next to it is a funny looking robot type figure. Kitchen is huge and designed in very artistic manner. Kitchen looks sleek and stylish with centrally located kitchen counter. Shining black cabinets, sparkling white floor and walls create contrast. Living area is huge, enclosed by curved walls, curved glass partitions and ceiling windows. In living room also there is a robot like figure and a white tree shaped sculpture. Curved red sofa is used as an accent in entire white interiors.

Corridors and halls have gold pillars; and bright and bold patterned walls. Same pattern extends to the floor carpets and at places to the ceiling also. Entire villa is designed in black and white. Gold is used as an accent in bedroom and corridors. Silk cushions with bold patterns are used as accent in hall sofa. Bedroom looks elegant with white bed on a gold embroidered bed frame. Accent wall is also designed in gold patterns. Master bath and dressing area are equally stylish. The modern luxurious villa has its own style and elegance. It looks grand with signature furnishings and unique interior design.

The site is quite challenging for a conventional house design as it is a narrow lot with 60’ vertical elevation. The house is divided into three sections namely master bedroom and family area, children section and guest section. Children section includes bedrooms, swimming pool access, game room and garages. Guest section consists of bedroom and a spare room that can be used as home office also. Each section is connected by elegant staircase and each of them has prominent view of distant mountain ranges. As the view of the Monk was fondly desired from almost every room, the house is built with maximum use of glass windows and doors. The house almost looks like a glass house.

Swimming pool is designed at a spot where mountain’s shadow falls throughout the year. The house is designed considering the wind direction from the mountains. Even during hottest summer months, cool breeze from the mountain tops flows down across the site. As a result, minimum use of air conditioning is required throughout the year. Also the house is designed in such a way that amazing sunsets can be enjoyed every evening.

As a lot of glass is used in the house design, privacy is the main concern. The entry way to the house leads through a car court. Interiors of the house are not visible from here. Main entrance is a frosted glass door that leads to a narrow gallery space. The gallery opens in a colorful garden of lush green desert plants and soft grass lawns. The residents call it the secret garden as it is not visible from outside. Desert plants have tremendous capacity to hold moisture. So when a breeze passes through the garden it cools down before entering the interiors of the house. The amazing house design lets the breeze circulate through this garden before entering the house.

The roof design is articulated and it covers interiors and extended over the exteriors. Butterfly shape of the roof is helpful in getting the view of the mountains. It also directs rainwater to surrounding landscapes. Lower level roof is used as a deck for the upper level. Materials used for the roof are in harmony with the surrounding landscapes. The house is designed using sustainable architecture. Natural resources like cool breeze, natural light, and rainwater are used effectively in house design. Techniques like glazing, insulation, cross air ventilation, exposed concrete floors, and efficient landscaping make the house energy efficient.

The seaside residence is located in Carmel, California. Carmel is a small city situated on a peninsula. It is surrounded by natural scenic beauty. Carmel has the rich heritage of artists, writers, and poets. It is world famous for its performing artists, beautiful beach and artifacts.

The seaside residence is built on the rocky top of a seaside landscape. It blends so well with the surrounding landscape that it looks like a natural extension. The seaside residence known as Otter Cove is divided into two wings. The Eastern wing gives privacy from the busy highway and the Western wing protects from the ocean wind. The residence is partially built underground. Underground spaces receive natural light from the staircases. Underground spaces are peaceful and quiet, whereas upper levels are busy with activity.

Floor-to-ceiling windows in upper level rooms offer breathtaking view of the sea. The interiors of the house are done equally beautifully. Stone and glass are the main materials used extensively in house design. The Eastern wing and Western wing are of arched shape. Arched wall connects both the wings.

Interiors are done in minimalist style. You can see a lot of empty uncluttered spaces in the house. Living room area is done with dark grey sofa and bucket shaped chairs. Center table with stone top on the metal frame looks exclusive. Other decorative pieces are also made of stone.

Bedroom has wooden flooring. It has one entire wall of glass. It gives a beautiful view of sea. The bedroom furniture is very simple. Attached bathroom has also a glass window that gives outside view.

Kitchen is divided into different counters. There is a balcony above the kitchen. A separate entrance to the kitchen can be used to enter or leave the house.

Spanned over two levels, the Otter Cove residence has a game room, gymnasium, home office and a three car garage. The seaside residence is certainly an enchanting residence to live in.

Generally, conversion of a barn or a shelter into a residential structure requires significant changes. The conversion should not damage the original look and feel of the structure. A successful conversion always maintains the historic integrity of the original structure. Luckily, here the shelter was designed well and it had sufficient windows in the original structure. As a result the architects have been able to convert the shelter into a cottage farmhouse without altering much of its outer look.

The original structure was very simple yet designed intelligently as far as lighting, ventilating and water supply are concerned. It had three compartments namely for shepherds, animals and cattle feed. To transform the shelter into a cottage home same structure was built in the mirror image of the original structure. This gives a V-shaped structure with three compartments in the North and three in the South. North side of the cottage farmhouse has kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. The South side has living room, dining room and study.

The cottage farmhouse is built in a farm surrounded by rocks and trees. The exteriors of the cottage house look rustic and rugged. The walls and foundation are of stones. The original primitive look of the shelter is maintained. The shuttered windows in the North and South walls give a unique ambiguous look to the whole structure. Exterior walls are appropriate for the climate and mingle with the surrounding landscape.

Interiors of the house are done in minimalist style. Single major objects are placed in each compartment. For example sofa in living room, bed in bedroom, writing desk in study, a stove in kitchen etc. These objects define each space beautifully and make it look modern and bright. The interiors are cozy and modest. The cottage farmhouse still maintains the connection with the past.
