Stylish Home Furniture Chair By Damaris & Marc

Here is a truly innovative design for a chair from the redoubtable designers Damaris and Marc from Barcelona who have demonstrated real creativity and an ability to think out of the box. Their creation is unique in every sense of the word and so is their source of inspiration which is the female pelvis bone. Yes, it was the female pelvis bone which fired the imagination of Damaris and Marc design studio and inspired them to craft this masterpiece using plastic shell’s bone and wood. The backrest is wooden and which joins the sides made from plastic shell. Called the Ilium Chair, one side is single moulded plastic which includes the main seat and the two front legs whilst the other side constitutes two wooden legs which are attached to the back of the seat and a wooden backrest which joins the two sides of the plastic Ilium and the pelvis together. The designer duo conceived this idea when they were expecting their first child. The magical feeling of creating a life together was overwhelming and their creative instincts were in full bloom.

The muscles and the skin encircle the pelvis bone and give a form to the human body. The pelvis bone is the receptacle where the magical process of the creation of life has been happening over thousands of years on the planet earth. Damaris and Marc wanted to relive the comforting experience of being enveloped in the warm embrace of the pelvic bone and thus decided to adapt it to the function of the lounge chair. As an unborn child is shielded by the pelvic bone from the harsh world outside, the Ilium chair recreates that sensation in the world outside the womb. The adult human can experience the similar sensation of being protected and nurtured as does the womb in the pelvis bone.

Furthermore, Damaris and Marc wanted to emphasize the links between love and life which is symbolized by the backrest of the seat. The Backrest resembles the ribcage since the series of slats along the column give space for the heart which symbolizes love and also the first heartbeat symbolizes the beginning of a new life. As the backrest of Damaris and Marc’s iconic Ilium chair joins the both the sides of the chair, the ribcage is connected to the pelvis, the heart is linked to a new life and love is linked to life. Damaris and Marc’s design is a labour of love and a product of their attempts to discover the meaning of life.
