Furniture that has been tailored for children needs to follow certain specifications in design in order to ensure the safety of children. Although, there is no current policy regarding the dimensions or design specifications of children’s furniture, there have been suggestions by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (U.S. CPSC) and American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) on policies for children’s safety. The most important safety factor relating to children’s furniture is the issue of toxic paints or paints with a high lead content. Although toxic paints are harmful for all of us, children are more vulnerable to toxins which can affect their mental development.

In an innovative initiative to do their bit to heal the environment as well as reduce their carbon footprint, Hiromatsu Furniture recycles all of their scraps into SONO Beans, profits of which are donated to the Green Belt Movement. They also developed a new product called SONO Clay, which is potters clay made out of sawdust, a byproduct of the furniture making process. This product is currently in the development stages although a spokesman of the company has confirmed that SONO Clay, when dried, displays a beautiful wooden lustre and color. These initiatives are a testimony to Hiromatsu’s commitment to preserving our environmental heritage. According to the U.S. CPSC, a ‘children’s product’ can be defined as “a consumer product designed or intended primarily for children 12 years of age or younger”.

There are already numerous safety regulations in place for children’s products such as toys, cribs, car seats, and flammability of sleepwear. For instance the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) under U.S. CPSC has mandated that all children’s products be tested for lead content and the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) F963 and CPSC 16 CFR 1303 has stipulated that anufacturers of children’s products should not produce to sell toys that contain.
