Glen Echo house design is one of the modern houses at Glen Echo Enclave, Maryland. The house is a single family house with built up area of 8,000 sq feet on a 1.7 acres big site with plenty of mature hardwood trees overlooking the Potomac River. Glen Echo is one of the posh suburban areas in Washington DC. It was established long back in 1889 by two brothers Edwin and Edward Baltzley. They called it ‘Glen Echo on the Potomac, The Washington Rhine.’ They had plans to sell the plots to rich and affluent people to build their stone castles. Even today Glen Echo has retained its splendor. Glen Echo house is built on a pre-existing layout of the previous structure to avoid cutting down surrounding trees. The site with thick woods has a steep slope. The house is built without disturbing ecology of the site. An additional block is added to accommodate home office and guest quarters. A garage and office are on the ground level of this new structure. Upper level contains guest suite. A reflecting pool connects the additional block with the main house. The office block is built using Kalwall panels and translucent glass. This gives luminous glow to the structure.

Kalwall panels are translucent sandwich panels made of composites of wood, fibers, metal and polymers using advanced technology. They extract and convert free energy from the Sun that can be utilized for the purpose of heating or cooling and for lighting the space. The panels have amazing strength in spite of being lightweight. Kalwall panels are used for effective insulation in a modern house design. Entire house is built using pre-cast concrete planks, concrete slabs and terrazzo flooring. Pre cast concrete planks are used to cover the open spaces also. Pre cast concrete planks offer added safety during natural disasters like earthquake, flood, and hurricane. They also provide fire safety, and general occupant comfort like noise reduction, stability etc. Technique of glazing is used on the Southern wall. As a result the house is energy efficient and utilizes nature sunlight for heating and cooling purposes. Bluestone gravel is spread in front of the house.

Interiors are done with white Oak Cabinets, white terrazzo tiles and Aluminum. Windows frames are made of black steel. Interiors are bright and with minimal details. As a result outdoor natural beauty draws the attention from inside. Glass doors give fantastic view of the woods. There are plenty of opportunities to reconnect with the picturesque beauty of the site.

Good home design is about creating a safe heaven where family flourishes among safe and secure environment. Is this possible on a tight budget in a highly populated street with closely built small houses? Here is an example of such small house design that is simple and elegant; and efficiently utilizes every inch of the space available. It is built with sturdy but inexpensive building materials and has tasteful interiors. The house is located at Camperdown, a heavily populated Inner West Sydney suburb. Inner West is a working class suburb in Sydney, Australia. Camperdown consists of old warehouses, terraces, modern apartments and some simple small houses. It is close to Sydney CBD and universities. As a result academics and young professionals have shifted here. They have renovated old, simple houses to suit their lifestyle.

The owner of the small house featured here wanted to renovate his house located in a street that is peaceful and quiet, but far from pretty. He wanted to design a house in such a way that it blends well with the neighboring houses in terms of size and shape, yet look distinctive and stylish in the existing streetscape. The architectural firm Cater Williamson accepted the challenge of designing a house within the client’s budget. The house has ground level and upper level. There is a small open area in front of the house. On ground level kitchen is centrally located with high ceilings. There is a home office, kitchen and dining area on the same level. Living area can be approached by stepping down three steps. It opens in a backyard in the rear of the house. The backyard has a covered shade used as laundry and wet area. Bedrooms and play area are upstairs giving privacy for restful sleep. Space is utilized efficiently to accommodate every need of the residents.

Interiors are done in a simple minimalist style. Furniture and rugs define the spaces for home office, dining area and living area. Interiors are mainly done in Rust and Navy Blue color pallet. Red and black colors are used as accent colors. Creatively designed pendant lamps hanging from the high ceiling above dining table illuminate the space. Prudent placement of windows and saw toothed roof lets in abundant natural light. Living room furniture is done in neutral colors with accent pillows. Walls are not covered with plaster. Exposed grey walls have bright red accent wall décor. The house looks stylish and elegant with tastefully designed interiors.

The Floating Shack house is a single family house designed for the owners of the Emerald Art Glass Factory, located at Pittsburgh, USA. It is the longest cantilevered structure that floats above the glass factory like a foreman’s shack. It extends out three times more than the Falling Water. The Falling Water is a masterpiece designed by the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935 in rural southwestern Pennsylvania. It was a weekend home for the Kaufmann family, built partially over a waterfall. Frank Lloyd Wright extensively used cantilevered galleries to capture the surrounding beauty. The Falling Water house is one of the 28 places listed by the Smithsonian’s Life List as ‘to visit before you die.’ It is considered as the best American Architecture work. Now the house is open to public as a museum. Everyday thousands of tourists visit the Falling Water house.

The floating shack house or Emerald Art Glass house is designed by the Fisher Architecture. Emerald Art Glass manufactures stained glass and architectural glass pieces including glass shower cubicles, etched glass doors, tempered glass walls, textured glass counter and sinks, custom made mirrors etc. The owner of the factory wanted a residential facility similar to a foreman’s shack above his manufacturing unit. The architects have done wonderful job by designing a steel clad horizontal structure hanging precariously over a concrete block. Site area for the shack is 2400 sq feet and built up area is 3700 sq feet. The steel framed house is firmly clasped using flat lock seamed Cor 10 panels over the concrete base. The horizontal structure is designed in such a way that it aligns with the suburban slopes connecting to the downtown. It also relates to the vertical design of the US Steel tower looming in the horizons. US Steel tower is the tallest skyscraper in Pittsburgh offering office space to thousands of businesses.

The shack is divided into two sections. One is the concrete base and the other is extended horizontal structure fixed over the concrete block. The concrete block contains garage, workshop, gymnasium and a guest bedroom. The horizontal steel structure upstairs contains living area, open kitchen and master bedroom. Glass wall on the sides of the living room make it comfortably warm and bright with natural light. Bamboo floored living area has butted glass façade at the other end. From inside it gives the view of the downtown and from outside it works as a sign for the glass factory. Master bedroom can be reached through a small series of stairs above the kitchen. The interiors of the shack are stylish and minimalist. It is a cozy and comfortable living place in downtown area.

Sky Garden house with a beautifully curved roof is snuggled up in a small plot of land surrounded by the neighboring houses. It is caged among solid walls on each side of the plot, unraveling it from the closely placed neighbors. All the levels of this four story building are connected by a spiral staircase. The staircase is built in the center of the house. Well like opening in the center allows light and sea breeze to circulate in the house. The front and rear portions are utilized to design beautiful roof gardens and terrace gardens. Each terrace has a beautiful view of the surroundings and access to the beautifully trimmed roof gardens. Roof of the lower level acts as a terrace garden to the upper level. Each level gets the feeling of a single story independent house with a beautiful garden.

The Monk’s shadow residence located in the Valley of Sun, Arizona is an amazing architectural design by Kendle Design Collaborative. Praying Monk is a geological formation approximately 30 million years old on Camelback Mountain in the Valley of Sun. Praying Monk is one of the colorful rock formations. The owner of the property has a fond affection towards the Praying Monk. As a result he wanted to design the house in such a way that they can see the Monk first thing in the morning as soon as they wake up. The whole house is designed on the basis of the view of the Praying Monk.

The site is quite challenging for a conventional house design as it is a narrow lot with 60’ vertical elevation. The house is divided into three sections namely master bedroom and family area, children section and guest section. Children section includes bedrooms, swimming pool access, game room and garages. Guest section consists of bedroom and a spare room that can be used as home office also. Each section is connected by elegant staircase and each of them has prominent view of distant mountain ranges. As the view of the Monk was fondly desired from almost every room, the house is built with maximum use of glass windows and doors. The house almost looks like a glass house.

Swimming pool is designed at a spot where mountain’s shadow falls throughout the year. The house is designed considering the wind direction from the mountains. Even during hottest summer months, cool breeze from the mountain tops flows down across the site. As a result, minimum use of air conditioning is required throughout the year. Also the house is designed in such a way that amazing sunsets can be enjoyed every evening.

As a lot of glass is used in the house design, privacy is the main concern. The entry way to the house leads through a car court. Interiors of the house are not visible from here. Main entrance is a frosted glass door that leads to a narrow gallery space. The gallery opens in a colorful garden of lush green desert plants and soft grass lawns. The residents call it the secret garden as it is not visible from outside. Desert plants have tremendous capacity to hold moisture. So when a breeze passes through the garden it cools down before entering the interiors of the house. The amazing house design lets the breeze circulate through this garden before entering the house.

The roof design is articulated and it covers interiors and extended over the exteriors. Butterfly shape of the roof is helpful in getting the view of the mountains. It also directs rainwater to surrounding landscapes. Lower level roof is used as a deck for the upper level. Materials used for the roof are in harmony with the surrounding landscapes. The house is designed using sustainable architecture. Natural resources like cool breeze, natural light, and rainwater are used effectively in house design. Techniques like glazing, insulation, cross air ventilation, exposed concrete floors, and efficient landscaping make the house energy efficient.
